What is aqueous paper?
Aqueous coating is a clear, water-based varnish added to a printed object during the printing process. It dries rapidly, resists fingerprints, and is ecologically friendly. AQ allows for distinctive package designs, aqueous coating is frequently the standard coating process for printing and packaging.
An aqueous solution is a chemical solution in which the solvent is water. The solutes are dissolved molecules and ions that are surrounded by water molecules. An aqueous solution is shown by writing (aq) after a chemical formula. For example, an aqueous solution of salt (NaCl) in water is NaCl(aq) or Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq). AQ coatings are also resistant to fingerprints and other impurities during handling, and it is also possible to enhance surface durability with a combination of different coat layers. However, the product type will largely determine the suitability of AQ coating for your packaging.
Remember that though this coating is water-based, it does not mean it is waterproof!
Cosmetic products and perfumes, for instance, contain chemicals that may make AQ coating challenging to maintain on the exterior or interior of the packaging due to the risk of leaking, so always consider the product and your needs when deciding on the best print coating for you.
What is the difference of aqueous coatings?
Unlike spot varnishes, aqueous coatings are applied with a blanket and do not require a plate. Aqueous varnish comes in a multitude of different finishes. The standard gloss, matte and satin are available, but you can also choose a soft touch finish which has a lovely “velvet” like feel.
Aqueous coatings are less glossy than a UV coating and are more resistant to cracking when folded. Aqueous coating can only be applied as a flood, as opposed to UV coatings, which can be applied as either a flood or a spot. This is the least expensive finishing option.
